Community in the Kitchen

At Heritage we are in the business of helping you find healing, flourishing even! And we recognize that this requires not just an awareness of but an attunement to and caring for the wholeness of the human person.  Care for the body is care for the mind.

This connection was made abundantly clear to me during the pandemic as I found myself at home with my three children. Take a moment to consider what room you spend the most time in in your home?  For me, as a food allergy mom, its the kitchen.  I can almost always be found creating something new (or cleaning it up) in my humble kitchen.  So, during the pandemic? You guessed it, it was me and my kids, my then 3yo on my hip, cooking and cleaning and making life in the kitchen.  We had master chef competitions (jolly rancher chicken anyone?) We took on the task of learning how to make homemade pizzas, soft pretzel bites, and just about everything in the air fryer.  My kids discovered the science of baking and the art of flavor.

Through that process we learned a lot about the body.  We learned about how food nourishes our brain and gives us energy to play.  We learned about the many hands that contributed to food finding its way to our table.  We learned how to recover from stepping on one another’s toes and respectfully hold different opinions about taste and artistic decisions.  It was through the use of our own hands and tastebuds that we slowly grew more connected in every possible way.  We learned more about our connection to nature and people.  We grew in connection to those we fed and sought to bring comfort through a difficult season.  We became more grounded in ourselves as embodied beings who joyfully depend on others for sustenance and have so much to enjoy and offer in return.  So? Its never too late to find yourself in new ways, perhaps you’ll join us in exploring the kitchen together and in so doing see what you find.
